International Influences from Indie Artists Monarchee

 Genre: Electropop

Check it out: Risco manages to combine funk guitar, electropop, and three languages. And it does it brilliantly.

I was originally only going to cover headliner act Zabel, but support Monarchee actually impressed me so much I wanted to do a separate post on them. Their music is electro-pop, and there’s A LOT of that around at the moment, but they’ve definitely managed to give it a fresh spin. Vio and Taehee met only last year but have already got a chemistry on stage which makes them immensely fun to watch.

Slow-burner ‘Hanger’ starts off as a slinky combo of vocals and lo-fi production until Vio takes the lead in the chorus. Here it harks of a more electronic Lana Del Rey, but it quickly descends again into a lush blend of harmonies as the two merge together. Providing contrast to some of their faster numbers, here they managed to tone themselves down perfectly without losing any of the impact.

The charismatic duo ended with Risco, their new single, and in truth I almost preferred it live. Recorded it is filled with funky guitar lines and a sense of cool which is more sophisticated than mere electro-pop, but it was the pair’s stage chemistry and the faster tempo which gave the version I saw the edge. This track is trilingual, in English, Korean, and French, and the three languages segue into each other without any difficulty at all.

Monarchee are a suave and cosmopolitan modern pop act who really know how to put on a show. A danger with smaller groups, especially with electronic music, is the failure to be able to recreate the energy of the recording live. Here though, there was no problem. Vio and Taehee have an infectious confidence. Their music is great, but what stood out was how good they are together- I would love to see more from them in the future!
