Country Swagger with a BBC Introducing Favourite

Check it out: forget anything you think you know about country music- Dutch Courage is fantastically catchy and full of energy, and will appeal to fans of rock, blues, alternative and much more.

British country artist and singer-songwriter Emma Moore has over ten years of musical experience, giving her plenty of time to develop the wit and swagger which jumps out from her new single, Dutch Courage.

It follows the 2018 radio favourite ‘Good Girl’, which marked a move towards something darker and heavier, and now Moore is back with a vengeance on this fiery, feisty track. Starting off with a driving riff, a hard rock guitar solo leads perfectly into the climax of the song, while subtle vocal effects keep one foot planted firmly in the 21st century. Moore’s steady rise and the versatility of her sound have always sustained interest, but Dutch Courage feels like the start of something bigger. It’s tempting to draw comparisons with artists such as The Shires, but Moore’s grit and gumption also bring to mind Alanis Morisette and Carrie Underwood, and she has a frank and emotional appeal which could easily see her fit amongst artists outside of her country niche.

If Dutch Courage predicts what’s to come, we could see some seriously bold moves from an artist as she gets much stronger in her own identity. Moore has managed to build up to a much heavier sound without the inherent sweetness of her voice being lost to the instruments or production. She might sing about it, but Moore doesn’t need any Dutch courage herself- she’s got the real thing needed to shake up British talent, and I’m hugely excited to see what comes next.

Dutch Courage is out now and is available on iTunes and Spotify.
